Mary Ann Choby, DMD, MS - Endodontics with a gentle touch.
Frequently Asked Questions

When do I need a root canal?
When the pulp is damaged due to decay and/or fractures in the tooth, treatment of the tooth is necessary. Some symptoms include increased sensitivity to cold, heat and chewing.

How many appointments are necessary?
The vast majority of Dr. Choby’s patients take just one visit to complete the procedure.

Does endodontic treatment hurt?
With the use of modern anesthetics, root canal treatment involves little or no discomfort during your appointment. Often there is pain before treatment and endodontic treatment provides relief.

Will there be pain after the procedure?
For the first few days, it is common to experience minor soreness in the area. Over the counter or prescribed pain medication and/or antibiotics generally control any discomfort. Dr. Choby and her staff work very hard to make your experience as pleasant as possible.

What are the alternatives to endodontic treatment?
Extraction is one alternative. Our ultimate priority is to help you preserve your natural teeth if at all possible. If the tooth cannot be saved, implants are very successful. We offer alternatives and will coordinate with your general dentist to guide you toward the best possible solution.

What are the benefits of endodontic treatment?
For the most patients endodontically treated teeth can last for years, even a lifetime. Unlike partial dentures or implants that are used when there are no other alternatives, root canal treatment restores the health of your own natural tooth.
